The Kickbacks of Pranayama

The Kickbacks of Pranayama

Described as breath control, Pranayama encompasses techniques from the yogic traditions. Different breathwork delivers different benefits to the body, mind, and spirit. Inhalation, exhalation, and retention are important keys.

The two options below are quite different. Start sitting with a straight spine, eyes closed. Take a few deep breaths, dropping into your body and the sound of your breath.

  1. Victorious Breath  (Ujjayi Pranayama) – The most commonly known, also called ocean breath. It calms heart rate and nerves, stimulates the thyroid, enhances equanimity, and relieves anxiety and stress.
    1. Slowly…inhale through the nose making a hollow sound in your throat (sounds like Darth Vadar).
    2. Exhale through the nose with the same hollow throat sound.
    3. Continue at a slow pace maintaining the hollow sound, focused on your throat chakra and the energy of peace and truth.
  2. Breath of Fire (Bhasktrika Pranayama) – Improves circulation, stimulates metabolism and detox. It acts like a pump to increase inner strength, willpower, and dynamism while easing depression and bringing clarity to the mind.
    1. At a fast pace…
    2. Exhale strongly using your abdominal muscles to squeeze your belly in as you forcefully push the air out through your nose.
    3. Inhale immediately with the same amount of force, belly expanding out strongly as the lower diaphragm fills.
    4. Continue in a fast, strong bellows breath pattern, focusing on your inner radiance and fire (the solar plexus chakra), and your larger intention.

For those with medical concerns, check with your medical provider to ensure any new practices are safe for you. Practice either of the above regularly and watch the benefits grow in your life.
