MESMERIZING!

Jan 31, 2024 09:57PM ● By Kristy Mayer

The terms hypnotizing and mesmerizing are often utilized interchangeably. The word mesmerizing comes from, Anton Mesmer, a Viennese physician from the 18th century.

Anton Mesmer had a treatment modality he called “Animal Magnetism”, which is considered an early form of hypnotism. According to Mesmer, Animal Magnetism works by the control of an invisible magnetic fluid that permeates all things and can be directed by a trained practitioner to bring about a desired state of perfect health.

Anton Mesmer achieved remarkable results in restoring health for a variety of ailments. Despite the success of his work, Animal Magnetism was never accepted by the medical establishment of his time. The Paris Medical Faculty and The Royal Society of Medicine decided that the treatment lacked the necessary scientific evidence to prove the existence of the invisible magnetic fluid and determined the results achieved were a result of stimulating the imagination of the patients.

Anton Mesmer did indeed treat many people and was so effective that Marie Antoinette wrote to him and asked him to stay in France to continue his practice. He declined her offer and eventually left to retreat from the public ridicule, rejection, and scandal that ultimately followed his zenith of popular acclaim.

Anton Mesmer had taught Animal Magnetism to many people before he retired. It is from those who continued to study, practice, understand, and explain it that it is now common knowledge that it is all done through the power of suggestion on the subconscious mind.  If you are interested in a hypnosis session, see ad on page 34.
