Is Fall the Best Time to Plant Fruit Trees?
Oct 01, 2024 10:08PM ● By Richie Mitchell of Bear Creek OrganicsEveryone asks, “Hey, when is the best time to plant a fruit tree? Is it too late to plant now in the fall, or should I wait until the spring?”
Plant Now! First, let’s address the age-old answer: The best time to plant a tree was ten years ago, and the next best time is now! It’s better to plant at any time compared to never planting and having regrets later in life – so get planting! Bear Creek Organics can help you succeed during any season.
Plant Well! What’s more important than ‘timing’? Planting the ‘right plants’ in the ‘right locations’, and ‘proper care’! If you want to succeed then plant for your growing zone, choose the best cultivars for disease resistance and the best fruit quality, plant with proper technique, and care for them well.
Without further ado, here are some of the many benefits of planting your new fruit trees, berry bushes, and native plants this fall.
Cooler weather = Lower stress on your trees:
With the weather cooling off and trees heading into dormancy, it’s an easygoing time to be a perennial plant. There’s no more stress to grow new leaves, branches, and to get taller. No more heat waves and drought. Only time to relax and settle in for winter.
Root system establishment:
Cooler weather and extra rain help plant roots to establish. There’s no more need to put energy into anything else other than rooting in a bit and then taking a nap.
Less watering needs:
Fall planting equates to 6 or 7 worry-free months with little watering needs, less responsibility for you, and your plants have extra time to become even more drought-tolerant before next summer.
Acclimating to your land:
Planting in fall gives your plants plenty of time to acclimate. They wake in the spring, in their new homes, ready to take advantage of spring.
