Women: Take First Strides®
Get moving with a beginner walking and running workshop for women beginning the week of March 20. First Strides® is a 12-week program—offered in the spring, summer and fall—that helps women who share a goal of improving their health by exercising regularly to comfortably progress from the couch to walking, jogging or running at a pace that’s right for them.
The program offers mentors to guide participants through a gradual training program and help them meet their goals. Each session includes presentations on various topics including buying proper walking and running shoes, injury prevention, heart health, nutrition and more by local experts.
Studies have shown that aerobic exercise such as walking or jogging strengthens the heart muscle, improves circulation, boosts good HDL cholesterol, lowers bad HDL cholesterol and lowers blood pressure. By taking part in the 12-week program, women can decrease their risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and may even shed those extra pounds.
