Decongestive Therapy Aids Many Conditions

Vera Lovewell, at Twin Ponds Integrative Health Center, has received an advanced certification for lymphatic drainage massage and complete decongestive therapy.

The lymph system works closely with the circulatory system in balancing the fluids of the body. It moves excess fluid from the interstitial spaces of the body and returns it to the circulatory system and is also an important component of the immune system, because it clears toxins and bacteria from the body. Sometimes, due to insufficiencies of the system; fluid is unable to be cleared from the legs or arms, and the resulting fluid overload presents as edema. Manual lymphatic drainage, a very light massage technique that opens the lymph channels and increases the flow of lymph, is used to assist the lymphatic system in this endeavor. This process also decreases pain, relieves stress and eases muscle tension.

Conditions that benefit from manual lymphatic drainage include orthopedic trauma, edema, cancer, arthritis, spasticity, pain, dermatological conditions and autoimmune diseases such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also a great treatment to detoxify the body and maintain a healthy fluid balance and support the immune system.
