Equine-Assisted Therapy and Coaching – Why it Works

Equine-assisted psychotherapy and coaching and is an evidence-based treatment that incorporates interactions with horses and can help us gain self-awareness of ourselves and others as we navigate life’s challenges and work towards our goals.

Horses provide the opportunity to practice problem-solving and social skills and provide a safe space where participants can explore their anxiety, traumas, and fears without feeling overwhelmed or judged. They allow us to connect without the risk of rejection or criticism and help make the transition into healthy relationships with people.

Horses are social animals that can perceive emotions and their environment with heightened awareness. They provide immediate feedback, which helps participants become aware of their behavior and social skills.  One reason equine-assisted activities are so effective is that animals can help regulate the nervous system and promote endorphins to help calm an overactive nervous system.

Those of us who have experienced trauma may have difficulty in trusting others and feeling safe. There may be resistance to opening up to a therapist and expressing feelings. People who do not feel comfortable in a traditional office setting, or who feel stuck in their current treatment, may find Equine-assisted therapy especially beneficial.

There is no doubt that spending time with horses can truly change our lives and relationships!
