Caitlin’s Animals: Prevent Heat Stroke in Your Pets

As we end summer, it's essential to remember that our dogs are susceptible to the heat.

To protect your furry friend from the heat, consider the following preventive measures:

• Hydration is Vital: Ensure your dog has access to fresh water at all times. Soak dry kibble in equal parts water to keep them hydrated. If your dog is a picky eater, add a spoonful of their favorite wet canned dog food.

• Tailor Activities: Smaller dogs and brachycephalic breeds have a higher risk of overheating. Adjust your exercise routine by scheduling walks and playtime during cooler hours, such as early mornings or late evenings.

• Mind the Pavement: Before taking your dog for a walk, check the temperature of any blacktop or pavement they might encounter. Place your palm on the surface for 7 seconds - if it feels uncomfortable, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

• Keep Them Cool: Carry a portable water bottle and bowl combo while you're on the move. Use a spray bottle to cool their paw pads, belly, and armpits.

Heat stroke can manifest in various ways. Look out for excessive drooling, deep red or purple gums, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dazed behavior, weakness, collapse, seizures, elevated heart rate, and agitation. If your dog exhibits any of these signs contact your veterinarian immediately for further guidance.

As responsible pet owners, it is our duty to safeguard our four-legged companions from the dangers of the heat. By recognizing the signs, taking preventive measures, and reacting promptly, we can ensure our dogs enjoy a safe and enjoyable summer. Remember, their well-being is in our hands, so let's make the right choices to keep them cool, hydrated, and protected.
