Mindfulness Techniques to Help Keep the Holiday Weight Off
Oct 31, 2024 03:06PM ● By Yuliya Semenovych, Elixir Health and WellnessStress, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed are just as likely descriptions of the holiday season as joyful, cheery, and memorable. Practicing mindfulness during this period can help you stay present, maintain emotional balance, and keep the holiday weight off. Here are some research-backed mindfulness strategies to help you:
1. Mindful Breathing
One of the simplest yet most effective mindfulness practices is mindful breathing. Research has shown that focusing on your breath can reduce stress and increase relaxation.
When you feel overwhelmed, take a moment to go into another room or even a bathroom. Close your eyes, take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, hold it for 4 seconds, and then exhale slowly for 7 seconds through your mouth. Repeat this several times, paying close attention to the sensations of each breath. This exercise helps bring your attention back to the present moment, releasing tension and calming your mind. Being in a more parasympathetic state helps with healthy digestion!
2. Gratitude Practice
Studies show that practicing gratitude not only lifts your mood but also improves overall well-being, increases happiness, and reduces stress. Try spending a few minutes each night to list three things you’re grateful for. Whether it’s family, friends, health, or the food on your table, acknowledging what you’re thankful for can shift your perspective, making you more resilient to illness and stressors.
3. Mindful Eating
Holiday gatherings often revolve around food, which can sometimes lead to overeating and feelings of guilt. Mindful eating is a strategy that encourages you to listen to your body’s signals of hunger and fullness. Slow down and fully experience your meals by putting your fork down between bites, chewing thoroughly, and noticing the colors, textures, and tastes of the food. Not eating in front of a TV or device also helps. Research suggests that mindful eating can reduce binge eating and ingesting extra calories.
4. Setting Boundaries
Mindfulness also involves being aware of your own needs and limits. During the holiday season especially, it’s easy to feel obligated to attend every event and fulfill every request. However, being mindful of your own well-being means knowing when to say “no.” Setting boundaries can help prevent burnout and when you take care of yourself first, you’ll be better able to take better care of others.
Remember, mindfulness is about slowing down, being present and embracing each moment fully!
