GUT Health and the THYROID!

All disease starts at the GUT!  Hippocrates said this statement long ago. It is the integrity or lining of the gut that is often disrupted when symptoms of low energy, weight gain, mood disorders, poor bone health and auto immunity arise.

Let us first look at the thyroid hormones and how they are regulated.  The hormones are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).  The thyroid takes its direction from the hypothalamus (brain) and the pituitary gland (base of the brain behind the bridge of the nose) by hormonal regulation.  It is the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) that signals the thyroid to release T4.  T4 converts to T3, both act as a give and take system between the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid and only works when everything is functioning properly

The major hormone released by the thyroid is T4 and is responsible for mood, energy and body temp.  T4 converts to T3 and is at the center of your digestive health, energy and bone health.  BUT there is a BUT , T4 can covert to Reverse T3 and competes on the same cells of the thyroid as T3 under the following factors: stress, starvation, trauma, infection, inflammation, toxins, steroids or any other chronic body dysfunction.  Reverse T3 is an inactive form of T3 which means it does NOT promote energy, digestion and bone health, despite normal T3 levels. T hus, in order to address the thyroid dysfunction – fix the GUT first!
