Meg Deak - Help for Perfectionism

How many people do you know who are constantly
striving for perfection? They are anxious and they drive themselves crazy. They
may even drive everyone else crazy, too. Perfectionism is when someone sets
extremely high standards, experiences intense self-criticism and worries about
what others think. High standards are important. It’s when our standards are always
high or impossibly high and our internal critic is never
satisfied, that we get into trouble. Letting go of perfectionism takes a shift
in perspective and a shift in habitual patterns. We have to recognize damaging
self-talk and challenge it. Will the world end if there is a dirty dish in the
sink? It also requires releasing the buildup of tension that is created by being
in a habitual state of “I have to.”
There is help to make these changes. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
works to release the emotional charge of anxiety and overwhelming emotion,
allowing you to shift into a calm, insightful state. You can then begin to
dissolve the stories of fear that your body carries. You can rewrite them,
creating new neural pathways of peace and contentment.
